Your WiFi smart LED bulb connects to a companion app, responds to voice commands via Alexa or Google, and receives firmware updates over the air. Article 2.1 of Regulation (EU) 2024/2847 covers it. Smart lighting without security functionality is a Default product — Module A self-assessment. No notified body. CRACheck generates the 8 Annex VII documents in 15 minutes. €149.

Smart lighting is one of the highest-volume connected product categories exported from China to the EU. WiFi bulbs, Zigbee LED strips, Bluetooth dimmers — each one is a product with digital elements under the CRA. Smart lighting without security functionality is not in Annex III — it is a Default product eligible for Module A self-assessment. The documentation obligation is straightforward: Article 31 + Annex VII. The challenge is volume: if you sell 15 different smart lighting models in the EU, you need 15 dossiers. CRACheck generates each one in 15-25 minutes. €149 per model. Volume pricing available: €99/model for 10-pack, €79/model for 30-pack. Browser-side.

Smart lighting CRA mistakes

ART. 2.1

A smart bulb is too simple for CRA — it just turns on and off

A smart bulb connects to WiFi, communicates with an app, receives firmware updates. It is a product with digital elements under Art. 2.1. Simplicity of function does not exempt it from the Regulation. The documentation requirement is proportional — a Default product with Module A is the lightest compliance path.

ANNEX I, PART I, 1(d)

Our LED strip uses a Tuya chip — Tuya handles security

Art. 13.5 requires due diligence on third-party components. Tuya provides the IoT platform. You integrate it into your LED strip. If the Tuya chip has a default configuration that is not secure by default, your product is non-compliant under Annex I Part I point 1(d). Document how you configure the Tuya component to meet CRA requirements.

SCALE

CRA compliance costs too much for a product that sells for €10

CRACheck costs €149 per product model — not per unit sold. If your €10 bulb sells 100,000 units, the CRA documentation cost is €149 ÷ 100,000 = €0.0015 per unit. With volume pricing (€79/model for 30-pack), it is even lower. The cost is per model, not per unit.

What each CRACheck dossier contains: 8 documents

Smart lighting documentation is straightforward for Default products. CRACheck generates 8 documents covering WiFi/Zigbee/BLE connectivity, Tuya/Matter integration and OTA updates.

CRA cybersecurity vs. existing CE

● LAYER 1

What CRACheck does

Generates Annex VII documentation for each smart lighting model. Default product, Module A. WiFi, Zigbee, BLE, Tuya, Matter — all covered.

∅ LAYER 2

What CRACheck does NOT do

CRACheck does not test your lighting product's electrical safety (LVD), electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) or radio compliance (RED). CRA covers cybersecurity. Existing CE directives cover the rest.

We generate cybersecurity documentation. Your CE lab handles the rest.

CRA penalty regime — Article 64 of Regulation (EU) 2024/2847

Article 64 establishes three tiers of administrative fines. Penalties are calculated per undertaking — but non-compliance on a single product can trigger inspection of your entire portfolio.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Zigbee bulb that only works with a hub in scope?
Yes. The Zigbee connection is a data connection under Art. 2.1. Even if the bulb requires a hub to connect to the internet, the Zigbee protocol is a data link. The bulb is in scope.
Does each colour variant need its own dossier?
If colour variants share the same firmware, WiFi/Zigbee module and cybersecurity properties, one dossier covers all variants. Different connectivity types (WiFi vs. Zigbee vs. BLE) are different products — separate dossiers.
Do Matter-compatible bulbs have different CRA obligations?
Matter is an interoperability protocol. Using Matter does not change CRA obligations. Your product still needs Annex VII documentation covering its cybersecurity properties. Matter certification is separate from CRA compliance.
What support period for a smart bulb?
Smart bulbs are expected to last 3-5 years. Art. 13.8 requires the support period to reflect expected use. 3-4 years of security updates is a reasonable declaration for consumer lighting.
Is this a subscription?
No. One-time payment. The licence includes 30 days of editing and 10 regenerations. The downloaded PDF is yours to keep.
Can I request a refund?
Pursuant to Art. 16(m) of Directive (EU) 2011/83 on consumer rights, by activating the licence you give express consent for the immediate generation of the digital content, waiving the 14-day withdrawal period. Refunds are accepted only for reproducible technical failures.
What if the regulation changes?
If the regulation changes during the validity of your licence, you can regenerate the document with the updated version of the generator at no additional cost.
